Irish people should be in the national system of birth, marriage and death registration from 1837. Registration of births was not compulsory and registration of deaths may have been forgotten when all the family was ill. Marriages can usually be found and the Irish had lower rates of illegitimacy or cohabitation unless they acquired Irish customs
