Poor relief in England & Wales
Poor relief came from the Anglican parish until 1834, and then the Board of Guardians. All poor Irish knew the distinction between going to church for services, or for help. Settlement examinations are one of our best sources for a place of birth or marriage in Ireland. These go right on to 1929 if they have survived.
